Owners comments

Born Slippy was commissioned by an experienced sailing yacht owner and his wife who wished to move up in size. Originally he was looking for a sailing yacht of 80 or so feet but discounted this on grounds of safety with a young family on board and the requirement for a number of crew which he and his wife considered to be too intrusive.

Having realised that a sailing yacht was not going to fit the bill he made a wish list...

After 12 months searching and visiting boat shows and comparing yachts, it became clear that such a vessel did not exist.

The owner became resigned to starting from scratch and designing his own unique motor boat.

Initial design feasibility studies revolved around a flush decked semi-displacement long waterline hull design targeting a smooth ride in choppy seas and fuel efficiency.

Having decided that the project was feasible the Owner visited yards in Turkey where his previous yacht (a Moody 54 sailing yacht) was based and after visiting various yards settled on a ship yard in Gocek (Orion Yachting) and continued the design phase with them.

The team at Orion led by yard owner Levent Ozdemir immediately bought into the concept and their enthusiasm pushed the project forward.

Before deciding on which boatyard to use the Owner had to decide on method of construction. Initially steel was considered but discounted on grounds of weight. Full composite construction was considered but in the end cold moulded wood/composite construction was chosen. Turkey has a ready supply of skilled yards working in wood but Orion impressed with their proposal to build a cold moulded hull encapsulated in eglass with eglass reinforcement where desirable, composite stringers and bulkheads and composite decks and superstructure. An added benefit of this construction method was light weight which fitted the owners plan to keep things light and simple. Orion were also happy to build the hull in wood vacuum bagging the thin wood veneers to ensure resin infusion and an incredibly strong and stiff hull. The wood core also meant that noise and vibration from the engines would be kept to an absolute minimum.

With design settled construction began in Orion's new facility in Gocek near Fethiye Turkey.

Born Slippy was the project name (reflecting her slippery and efficient hull) and the name stuck...she was launched in April 2011 and in sea trials realised her full potential. Her stunning looks stop traffic wherever she slips quietly into port. Her reverse bow narrow waterline beam and extremely long waterline length with light displacement produced some astonishing figures for a boat of this size. She seems happiest cruising at 1700rpm on her twin 380hp Yanmars sipping less than 30 litres per hour at 10 knots. Her range at this speed is over 1000 nm on her 3000 litre tanks. She is quiet and vibration free at this speed with exhaust gasses exiting below the water line to keep her quiet and leave the fumes in her wake away from the occupants.

She has a 1.8kw semi flexible solar array on her hard top with a 22kw Onan generator when needed. The generator is only needed for air conditioning, washing machine, cooking and the water maker with powerful inverters ensuring that all refrigeration, coffee machine, kettle, dish washer and entertainment systems can be run from the battery bank which is topped up by the solar panels managed by an Outback controller.

Extensive insulation materials have been used in the hull and decks to ensure she remains cool below deck. Low energy LED lights are used throughout to minimise heat generation and energy consumption.

Her Atlas carbon davit allows an aluminium hulled rib with a 40hp outboard to be stowed on the bathing platform and a jet ski to be stored on the foredeck.

Born Slippy has been maintained in immaculate condition by her original owner and the team that originally constructed her. She has never been chartered and after a repaint at the end of 2022 season (under the supervision of the original builder) awaits a new owner to explore the Med all over again.
